Media Specificity

Image
This portrait uses procreate/digital art. Its affordances include the ability to create quickly, and with zero mess. The procreate app is only $10, which allows this medium to be made at no cost, It is easily shareable and duplicable. It also allows for certain features to be highlighted more than others. For example, in this portrait, the eyes receive the most attention, and lines are used to direct you to her face. Its limitations include a lack of detail that is represented in photography. The texture of the coat, the sunset that caused the gaze, the changing colors of the sun reflecting off her hair, are all features lost in this portrait. Digital media strips the image from the authenticity of the individual and instead places the individual in a virtual world. Shading using this medium was complicated and challenging. The medium is also challenging with its learning curve. I had to ask my roommate for lots of help when it comes to layering and shading the hands. I had used procre...

Something Hopeful Photograph

Image
I slipped on the ice a few days ago. I dread the days when all the pathways freeze. I must carefully place each foot and every step requires effort and concentration. So my hope is captured in the puddles I see on campus concrete; my hope is captured in melting snow. To some the photo looks like a captured cold Utah winter, but I know the days before this photograph; I know of the snow before it was overdrodden. I know of the dropping temperatures, and the fear of the wind because I lost my winter coat. I know of the clouded mountains, where my favorite sunset silhouette is stolen away. I step on the water puddles with glee. I can nearly run along the pavement. The snow is melting. I am unsure how long the few degree increase will remain. Perhaps tomorrow another snow will fall, refreezing the melted snow, creating even worse conditions. Yet, for now, I smile at the hope of warmer weather and days where I can run free without worrying if my steps are placed just right. Sunnier da...
