Process Piece

Reflection: The 1-2 minute time restraint made the video a bit more challenging, because I had chosen to do a simple process like filling up my water bottle. I enjoyed this work, however, because it required authenticity. If you notice, I am laughing any the background because I am struggling to hold down the water fountain button and hold my water bottle at the same time, a daily struggle that was magnified through this silent process. I enjoyed the constraints, it made this project fun and unique. Like the Barney reading mentions, "students must have the opportunity to read and write authentically in the visual arts" and these constraints created that opportunity. It allowed me to think like a creator and to make specific decisions about my piece. Like Jan Yager's work, my work is made from my environment. It was made literally on my way to class with my cellphone. I love that art can be anywhere and that that is the beauty of an authentic piece. Experimenting with this assignment allowed me to become in a small way an artist like Yager and placed me in an artistic platform. I believe in a future classroom this would be a great assignment for students to try. It allows them to see what constraints are out there and can be applied to other disciplines. For example, a literature course could place constraints on a poem and ow much time you get to write the poem, or even the topic of the poem. These constraints encourage more creativity. I believe what is also essential is to have a conversation about the piece. I believe these conversations, like the one Mr. Baker had with his classroom in the Barney reading, are just as powerful and authentic as the actual creative process.
I love your idea to fill up a water bottle! This is something almost everyone does multiple times a day, so it is very authentic and definitely a process (often an annoying one with old fountains in the HFAC). What if, to make your recording more authentic—because that seems to be important to you—the audio captured started recording way in advance of when you actually filled your water bottle. To the point where you could forget you were trying to record it in the first place. That way, the audio isn't affected by the process of obtaining it at all. Then it could be cut down to fit the time constraint.
